Your Health, Your Choice: The Importance of Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, and cervical screening plays a vital role in early detection. This simple and effective procedure can help identify precancerous changes in the cervix, the opening of the womb from the vagina, allowing for early intervention and significantly improving the chances of successful treatment.

Who Should Get Screened?

  • In the UAE, cervical screening is recommended for women aged 25 to 64, regardless of sexual history.
  • Women who have been vaccinated against HPV are still recommended to get screened regularly.

Why is Cervical Screening Important?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can cause abnormal cell changes on the cervix. These changes, if left undetected, can develop into cervical cancer over time. Cervical screening helps identify these abnormal cells before they become cancerous.

Types of Cervical Screening Tests:

There are two main types of cervical screening tests available:

  • Pap test (Pap smear): A sample of cells is collected from the cervix and examined under a microscope for abnormalities.
  • HPV test: This test detects the presence of the HPV virus, which can increase the risk of cervical cancer.

What Happens During a Screening Appointment?

A cervical screening appointment is typically a quick and painless procedure. During the appointment, a healthcare professional will:

  • Gently insert a speculum, an instrument that opens the vagina for easier visualization of the cervix.
  • Use a soft brush or swab to collect a small sample of cells from the cervix.
  • Send the sample to a laboratory for testing.

What Happens After the Test?

You will receive your test results within a few weeks. Depending on the results, your doctor might recommend:

  • No further action: If the test is normal, you will likely be advised to return for screening at the recommended interval (usually every 3-5 years).
  • Further testing: If the test shows abnormal cells, you might need additional tests to determine the severity of the abnormality.
  • Treatment: If precancerous cells are found, early treatment options are available to prevent them from developing into cancer.

Empowering Yourself Through Screening

Cervical screening is a crucial tool for women to take charge of their health. By getting screened regularly, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer.
