About PGD, PGT-A, NGS and Your Fertility Journey

If you’re considering in vitro fertilization (IVF), you might come across an array of acronyms related to genetic testing. Understanding these terms can empower you to make informed decisions throughout your fertility journey. Here’s a breakdown of PGD, PGT-A, and NGS, and how they differ:

  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT):This is the umbrella term encompassing all genetic tests performed on embryos created during IVF. PGT helps identify embryos with a higher chance of successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies (PGT-A):Previously known as preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), PGT-A analyzes the number of chromosomes in an embryo. Having the right number of chromosomes (46) is crucial for healthy development. PGT-A helps identify embryos free of chromosomal abnormalities (aneuploidies) which can lead to miscarriage or genetic conditions.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic (PGT-M):Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic (PGT-M) is a cutting-edge genetic screening technique employed during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. It allows prospective parents who are carriers of a known genetic disorder to prevent the transmission of the condition to their offspring. By analyzing embryos created through IVF, PGT-M identifies those free of the targeted genetic mutation, thus enabling the selection of healthy embryos for implantation. This method empowers individuals with a family history of single-gene disorders to make informed reproductive decisions, reducing the risk of passing genetic diseases to future generations.
  • Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS): This is a powerful genetic testing technique used in PGT-A. NGS examines an embryo's entire genetic makeup, providing a more comprehensive analysis compared to older methods. NGS is becoming the preferred method for PGT-A due to its accuracy and ability to detect a wider range of chromosomal issues.

Consultion

During a consultation, a genetics professional meets with an individual or family to discuss genetic risks or to diagnose, confirm, or rule out a genetic condition.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is a screening test that can be performed on embryos created via in vitro fertilization (IVF) to genetically analyze the embryos prior to transfer.

Embryo Transfer After PGD

Genetic testing is done on the embryonic cell that are removed. The rest are allowed to continue developing. Taking one or a few cells at such an early stage of development does not harm the embryo, and most embryos will continue to develop normally.
